Introduction: Why Myanmar?
Welcome, fellow digital nomads, to the magical world of Myanmar! For those who have had enough of the familiar tourist trail, Myanmar offers a refreshing change of scenery. Here, I’ll share my journey and guide you through Myanmar’s golden pagodas, ancient cities, and unique experiences only found in this enchanting country. So, buckle up and get ready to be inspired as you embark on this magical journey.
Chasing Sunsets in Bagan
Let’s start with the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets in Bagan. Known for its mystical temples, pagodas, and stupas, Bagan stands as a symbol of the Magic of Myanmar. This is where you’ll find those epic sunrise and sunset photos that will leave your Instagram followers in awe. I’m talking about thousands of temples scattered across the horizon, with hot air balloons providing the perfect backdrop. Who wouldn’t love it?
Waking up early is key to capturing the perfect sunrise. I recommend finding a less-crowded temple where you can perch yourself on top and gaze at the dreamy sky as it gradually lights up. Bring a cup of freshly brewed Burmese tea and enjoy the serenity as the sky becomes a canvas of warm colors. After relishing such beauty, working on your laptop during the day won’t seem so tedious.
As the sun sets, I suggest exploring the Ananda Temple, Shwezigon Pagoda, or the Dhammayangyi Temple. These landmarks offer a unique vantage point to take in the golden hues of the sunset. Trust me, after experiencing a Bagan sunset, you’ll question why you didn’t include Myanmar on your digital nomad bucket list sooner.
Yangon: The City of Golden Pagodas
Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is the perfect fusion of modernity and tradition. This bustling city offers unique attractions, a rich history, and as you guessed it, golden pagodas. While you’re here, don’t miss the Shwedagon Pagoda, an iconic monument standing tall at 326 feet and coated in gold. The reflection of the sun on the golden surface creates a mesmerizing sight you won’t forget.
Exploring Yangon’s downtown area is a must as well. Colonial buildings, street vendors, and pulsating energy create the atmosphere of a city that’s shaking off the shackles of its past and stepping into the present. Make sure you take some time to wander around the markets, as the city is a shopper’s paradise; from the Bogyoke Aung San Market to the Yangon Circular Train, you’re bound to find unique souvenirs and crafts.
As a digital nomad, I found Yangon to be the perfect city to get things done. With its numerous (and air-conditioned, phew!) co-working spaces and cafes, you’ll have no problem staying connected and maintaining productivity. Coffee shops like Easy Café and Jojo’s Cafe and Bakery will become your best friends as you sip on quality coffee and tackle those deadlines in style.

Mandalay: A Taste of Ancient Cities
As digital nomads, our work may be modern, but our hearts crave the ancient world. Head up to Mandalay and get a taste of Myanmar’s rich heritage. This city is full of history, culture, and artistic treasures. I suggest starting your visit at the Mandalay Palace, the last residence of the Burmese monarchy.
As you walk through the palace grounds, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the intricate wood carvings and stately architecture. Even though what you see now is a reconstruction (sadly, the original palace was destroyed in World War II), it still has an air of royalty that transports you back in time.
Another fascinating site is the Kuthodaw Pagoda, home to the world’s largest book—no, seriously! Here, 729 marble slabs inscribed with the teachings of Buddha are housed within intricately designed and numbered white stupas. This is where you’ll find the perfect blend of art, religion, and history. Oh, and make sure you have your camera handy; you’ll want to capture the moment.
After a long day of exploring Mandalay’s wonders, you’ll need a place to recharge and meet fellow digital nomads. Luckily, Mandalay is teeming with cafes that offer quality coffee, delicious food, and cozy workspaces. Nest House Cafe is one of my personal favorites.
Tantalizing Burmese Cuisine
On this digital nomad adventure, I wouldn’t dare leave out one of my favorite aspects of traveling—food! While Burmese cuisine may not be as famous as Thai or Vietnamese food, you’ll be surprised by how diverse and mouthwatering it is. The Magic of Myanmar lies in its fusion of flavors, borrowing influences from its neighbors.
To dip your toes into Burmese gastronomy, begin with the classic mohinga, a fish soup with rice noodles, topped with garnishes like crispy lentils and cilantro. This dish is perfect for those chilly days when you want to warm up your soul and feel like a local.
Curry lovers, rejoice! Myanmar has its own unique curries, which tend to be lighter and less spicy than their Indian counterparts. Pair the curry with buttery rice and the Burmese side salad, laphet thoke, made with tea leaves, cabbage, tomatoes, and a medley of crunchy nuts and seeds. Trust me, your taste buds will do a happy dance.
Finally, for dessert, try the shwe yin aye, a bowl of sweet coconut milk filled with cubes of sticky rice, bread, sago pearls, and jelly. It’s the perfect treat to cool down on a sweltering Burmese day.

Inle Lake: A Serene Escape
While city life and historical landmarks are fascinating, every digital nomad needs a serene escape to unwind and recharge. For me, Inle Lake provided that much-needed tranquility. This vast body of water, surrounded by lush hills, is home to the Intha people, known for their unique leg-rowing technique. Picture yourself gently gliding across the water in a wooden boat, watching fishermen gracefully balance on one leg while handling their nets—talk about multitasking skills!
Inle Lake also offers a haven for nature lovers. Rent a bicycle and explore the countryside, where you’ll pass through quaint villages, picturesque stilt houses, and vibrant floating gardens. If you time your visit right, you may even witness one of the local festivals, like the Thadingyut Festival of Lights, which lasts three days and offers a glimpse into the rich culture and traditions of the Intha people.
Finding a quiet corner to work by the lake is a breeze. With several cafes offering Wi-Fi and mesmerizing lake views, you’ll find it easy to stay connected and productive while soaking in the peaceful ambience. Plus, can you imagine a better Zoom meeting background than the shimmering waters of Inle Lake?
Connectivity and Co-Working Spaces
Now, let’s talk about the digital part of being a digital nomad. I know what you might be thinking, “But how’s the Wi-Fi in Myanmar?” Fear not, dear nomads, Myanmar has seen a rapid improvement in internet connectivity in recent years. Of course, it may not be as fast as what you’re used to back home, but it’s more than sufficient for work and staying connected with friends and family.
In major cities like Yangon and Mandalay, you’ll have no problem finding reliable internet connections in cafes, hotels, and co-working spaces. While co-working spaces aren’t as widespread as in other Southeast Asian countries, there’s still a growing number of locations where you can work in comfort and mingle with fellow nomads. Check out spaces like Impact Hub Yangon, Phandeeyar, and Rakkhaposhi in Yangon, or The Hive Coworking Space in Mandalay. In addition to fast Wi-Fi and comfy chairs, these spaces often host networking events and workshops, allowing you to make the most out of your digital nomad lifestyle.
In smaller towns or off-the-beaten-path locations, getting a local SIM card is a lifesaver. I suggest purchasing one as soon as you arrive in the country, as it will make your life so much easier. Providers like Ooredoo and Telenor offer affordable plans, giving you internet access even in the most remote places, and making sure you never miss a deadline (or an opportunity to post an envy-inducing travel photo).
Visa Tips and Travel Hacks
Visa regulations can be a hurdle for digital nomads, but fortunately, Myanmar makes the process a breeze. Most nationalities can apply for a 28-day e-visa online, which only takes about three days to process. It’s easy, quick, and eliminates the need to visit a consulate or embassy. Rejoice!
An essential tip for digital nomads in Myanmar is to pack a power bank. While power outages are becoming less frequent, they still occasionally occur, and you don’t want to be caught off guard with a dead laptop or phone during a crucial moment. Also, keep in mind that Myanmar uses a unique combination of Type C, D, and G power sockets, so you’ll want to bring the appropriate adapters.
Another valuable tip is to always carry cash. Although some establishments accept cards or mobile payments, smaller businesses and street vendors often require cash. Myanmar’s currency is the kyat (pronounced “chat”), so make sure you have enough kyats in your wallet as you embark on thrilling escapades across the country.
With Myanmar’s ever-developing transportation infrastructure, getting around the country is much more accessible (and comfortable) than before. Overnight buses, domestic flights, and even trains are available, allowing you to choose your preferred mode of transportation. My recommendation, however, is to take the scenic route and opt for train rides when possible. There’s nothing quite like the experience of traversing through the picturesque countryside while forming connections with locals on a leisurely train ride.
Conclusion: The Magical Adventure Awaits
The Magic of Myanmar lies not only in its golden pagodas, ancient cities, or tantalizing cuisine, but also in the warm smiles and hospitality of its people. As a digital nomad, it’s these genuine human connections that make our journey even more rewarding.
So, if you’re considering the next destination for your digital nomad adventure, look no further than the enchanting land of Myanmar. It’s a treasure trove of unique experiences, rich history, and jaw-dropping landscapes that will leave you in awe.
