Welcome to my thrilling adventure discovering South Korea! As a digital nomad, I’m constantly seeking new destinations to explore, and South Korea has always been on my bucket list. This beautiful country, located on the Korean Peninsula, is a delightful blend of traditional and modern culture, bursting with vibrant cities, natural wonders, and scrumptious food. Join me as I explore Seoul, Jeju Island, and more, revealing the rich heritage and dynamic charm of South Korea.
Seoul: The Vibrant Capital
There’s no better place to start our journey than Seoul, the bustling capital of South Korea. With its towering skyscrapers, ancient palaces, and trendy cafes, this city is an energetic blend of old and new. I was instantly drawn to the fast-paced energy that runs through the streets of Seoul, filling me with a sense of excitement and adventure.

One of my favorite places to visit in Seoul was the Gyeongbokgung Palace, a grand structure that was once the main royal residence during the Joseon Dynasty. The palace is an architectural gem, featuring intricate designs and vibrant colors that breathe life into the ancient history. Don’t miss the traditional changing of the guards ceremony, which is an incredible spectacle that transports you back in time.
If you’re a fan of the arts, you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with the Bukchon Hanok Village. This quaint neighborhood is brimming with traditional Korean houses called “hanoks” that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. Walking down the narrow streets, I couldn’t help but feel as though I was transported to a different era. The village is also home to several art galleries, craft workshops, and quaint teahouses, making it the perfect place to immerse yourself in Korean culture.
Seoul’s modern side is just as captivating as its historic charm. Make sure to visit the N Seoul Tower for panoramic views of the city skyline that will leave you speechless. The tower is also home to the famous Love Locks, where couples (and hopeful romantics like myself) attach locks to the fence as a symbol of their unbreakable love. Who said romance was dead?

Jeju Island: Earth’s Hidden Paradise
Leaving the bustling city behind, our journey continued to Jeju Island, a magical destination that stole my heart the moment I set foot on its shores. This enchanting island, often referred to as the “Hawaii of South Korea,” is filled with lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and jaw-dropping natural wonders waiting to be explored.

One must-visit attraction is the Jeju Island’s dormant volcano, Mount Hallasan. As the highest peak in South Korea, reaching its summit was a challenge I gladly accepted. And let me tell you, the panoramic views of the island from the top were worth every step. Truth be told, I felt like I had conquered the world (or at least a small part of it)!
For some seaside fun, you can’t go wrong with the Hyeopjae Beach, boasting crystal-clear waters and soft, white sands. As a lover of all things aquatic, I was thrilled to discover that the beach is also home to some fascinating marine life, perfect for snorkeling or diving. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a pod of dolphins gracefully swimming nearby.
To truly appreciate the stunning landscapes that Jeju Island has to offer, make your way to the Seongsan Ilchulbong, which is also known as the Sunrise Peak. As the name suggests, this otherworldly volcanic crater offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the sun’s golden rays illuminating the sky at dawn. Trust me, nothing can quite prepare you for the sublime beauty of this experience.
A Culinary Field Trip: Korean Food
Discovering South Korea wouldn’t be complete without delving into the mouth-watering world of Korean cuisine. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I took it upon myself to taste my way through as many dishes as possible (all in the name of research, of course). One delicious bite at a time, I was completely hooked.
My culinary journey began with the iconic Korean dish, kimchi. This fermented and spicy cabbage is a staple in every meal, adding a kick of flavor to even the simplest of dishes. While I must admit it was an acquired taste, I now can’t imagine my life without this spicy, tangy delight.
Of course, no trip to South Korea would be complete without trying the legendary Korean BBQ. Friends, let me tell you, this is not your ordinary BBQ experience. Imagine tender, juicy cuts of meat grilled to perfection right at your table, paired with an array of side dishes (called “banchan”), and washed down with a shot of soju, a Korean spirit. It’s a feast fit for a king, or in this case, a digital nomad queen!
One dish that took me by surprise was the fiery yet addictive Tteokbokki, a street food favorite made of chewy rice cakes smothered in a spicy sauce. A word of caution: this dish is not for the faint of heart, but if you can handle the heat, you’re in for a flavor explosion that’ll have you begging for more.

Rich Heritage: Temples and Palaces
The rich cultural heritage of South Korea is beautifully showcased through its majestic temples and palaces. As a history buff, exploring these ancient architectural wonders was an absolute delight.
One of my favorite temples, the Bulguksa Temple, is a true symbol of the country’s architectural prowess. Located in the city of Gyeongju, this historic temple is considered a masterpiece of Buddhist art, featuring intricate stone pagodas, ornate bridges, and beautiful gardens. Stepping into this serene sanctuary, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of peace and tranquility.
Another architectural gem is the Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Seoul. This palace, built during the Joseon Dynasty, is a harmonious blend of traditional Korean architecture and stunning natural landscapes. Be sure to visit the palace’s “Secret Garden,” a hidden oasis adorned with serene ponds, lush greenery, and elegant pavilions.
While exploring the rich heritage of South Korea, I found myself captivated by the beauty and resilience of these ancient structures, reminding me that there’s so much more to discover beneath the surface of this enchanting land.
K-Pop and K-Dramas: Entertainment Treasure
As a self-confessed K-Pop and K-Drama fan, no adventure in South Korea would be complete without immersing myself in the colorful world of Korean entertainment. South Korea is truly an entertainment treasure trove, having gifted us with global sensations like BTS and captivating dramas such as “Crash Landing on You.”
My first stop? The vibrant streets of Apgujeong Rodeo, where I found myself surrounded by glitzy shops, swanky cafes, and massive billboards featuring my favorite K-Pop idols. As I wandered down the bustling streets, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement—this was the birthplace of the Hallyu Wave that’s taken the world by storm!
While in Seoul, make sure to embark on a K-Drama tour to visit famous filming locations like the Nami Island, where the iconic drama “Winter Sonata” was filmed. Channel your inner leading lady or gentleman as you stroll down picturesque tree-lined paths and capture the perfect photo to evoke envious sighs from your friends back home.
And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of your favorite K-Pop stars in action. While I didn’t bump into any celebs during my visit (sigh), I did manage to catch a live performance at a K-Pop music show. The energy, the dance moves, the catchy tunes—let’s just say it’s an experience I won’t soon forget!
Outdoor Adventures Aplenty
For nature lovers and adventure seekers, South Korea is a playground that promises thrilling experiences and breathtaking vistas at every turn. So, strap on your hiking boots and let’s take on some adrenaline-pumping escapades!
During my trip, I conquered the famed Seoraksan National Park, home to some of the most scenic hiking trails in the country. The park’s towering peaks, dense forests, and enchanting waterfalls create a mesmerizing backdrop for an unforgettable adventure. And as I reached the summit, taking in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and wonder.

For a change of pace, I swapped my hiking boots for a bicycle and pedaled my way through the picturesque Han River Park in Seoul. The park’s extensive bike paths, complemented by the serene river and majestic skyline, made for a leisurely yet breathtaking ride. Who knew urban life and nature could coexist so harmoniously?
And let’s not forget about the thrill of water sports! At the Busan Haeundae Beach, I indulged in some exhilarating jet skiing, as well as surfing the waves like a true digital nomad. The beach’s crystal-clear waters, golden sands, and vibrant atmosphere provide the perfect setting for a fun-filled day in the sun.

Shopping Spree: Unique Finds
No trip to South Korea would be complete without an epic shopping spree, and I am more than happy to oblige! From chic boutiques to massive shopping malls, South Korea’s shopping scene is a dream come true for shopaholics like myself.
Myeongdong in Seoul is the ultimate shopping haven, where you can find everything from trendy clothing and beauty products to unique souvenirs and mouth-watering street food. Navigating the bustling streets and colorful shops is like embarking on a treasure hunt, with unique finds waiting to be discovered around every corner.
For a more traditional shopping experience, head to the famous Insadong district. This lively area is brimming with art galleries, antique shops, and quaint teahouses, offering a taste of old-world Korea. Don’t forget to pick up some Hangeul-themed souvenirs, like cute stationery or intricate pottery, as a memento of your time discovering South Korea.
And if you’re looking for an epic bargain, the Dongdaemun Market is the place to be. This sprawling market, open 24 hours, is a paradise for night owls and budget shoppers alike, offering everything from cutting-edge fashion to unique knick-knacks. But be warned: navigating this maze of shops can be a dizzying experience, so make sure to bring your A-game and bargaining skills!
