Hello, fellow wanderers and fitness digital nomads! It’s no secret that life on the road can throw some curveballs at our fitness routines. Between unpredictable schedules, cramped accommodations, and irresistible local delicacies (I’m looking at you, French pastries), staying fit while traveling might seem like an insurmountable challenge. Fear not, my adventurous amigos! I’ve compiled a list of the best workouts and fitness routines that cater to your nomadic lifestyle and require minimal time, space, and equipment. Get ready to break a sweat and feel fab all around the globe!
Bodyweight Bonanza
When it comes to travel-friendly workouts, bodyweight exercises reign supreme. There’s no need for fancy equipment or gym memberships – all you need is your fabulous self and the willingness to get moving. Push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks are all excellent examples of exercises that can be done just about anywhere. In fact, I’ve been known to bust out some lunges in airport terminals between flights. Talk about a layover productivity boost!
One of my favorite bodyweight workout routines is the classic Tabata. It’s a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, consisting of 20 seconds of all-out effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for a total of four minutes. Choose four bodyweight exercises, like burpees, push-ups, high knees, and mountain climbers, and perform each for 20 seconds with 10 seconds of rest in between. After completing the four exercises, rest for one minute, then start again. Aim for a total of three to five rounds for a quick, heart-pumping workout that can be done in a hotel room or even the smallest of Airbnb spaces.
By the way, speaking of staying active and efficient both physically and mentally, why not check out my posts on “Culinary Customs: Etiquette Tips for Enjoying Meals Around the World” to further expand your knowledge on enjoying those delicious travel treats in a well-mannered way, and “The Pomodoro Technique Unpacked: Boost Your Focus and Get More Done in Less Time” to optimize your productivity in between those amazing workout sessions?
Yoga On-the-Go
As digital nomads, we know that travel can sometimes be draining, both physically and mentally. That’s where yoga comes in! This ancient practice is perfect for keeping our bodies fit and flexible, as well as calming our minds in the face of new adventures and challenges.
Incorporate a daily yoga routine into your travel schedule, even if it’s just 10-15 minutes per day. No need for a fancy studio – just grab a travel-sized yoga mat (I swear by the foldable ones) and find a peaceful spot in your accommodation or nearby park. You can follow along with a YouTube tutorial or download a yoga app to have guided classes no matter where in the world you might be nestled.
Feeling a little more adventurous? Take your yoga practice outdoors! Beach yoga, anyone? There’s nothing quite like sinking your toes into the sand while flowing through a sun salutation. Or, if you’re feeling truly daring, why not give aerial yoga or stand-up paddleboard yoga a try? Just don’t forget to take a snap for the ‘gram!
Yoga can be tailored to fit your personal fitness needs, whether you’re looking for slow and relaxing stretches or more challenging strength-building poses. Plus, you’ll be enhancing your balance, flexibility, and inner peace (which definitely comes in handy for those long days of travel).
HIIT for Quick Fits
With packed schedules and constant movement, digital nomads often find themselves crunched for time – but that doesn’t mean you should skip a workout altogether. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a fantastic solution for getting your heart rate up and muscles working in a short amount of time. Trust me; you’ll feel energized and ready to tackle the rest of your day!
HIIT workouts involve alternating between intense periods of exercise and recovery (active rest), making your body work harder than it would during a steady-state workout. You can create your own HIIT routine using a variety of exercises, such as burpees, jump squats, and mountain climbers.
A simple HIIT workout I love is called “The 7-Minute Miracle,” and it’s just as amazing as it sounds! It includes 12 exercises that are done for 30 seconds each, with 10 seconds of rest in between. You can do this workout with minimal space and no equipment, making it perfect for digital nomads. Here’s the list of exercises:
- Jumping jacks
- Wall sit
- Push-ups
- Crunches
- Step-ups
- Squats
- Tricep dips
- Plank
- High knees
- Lunges
- Push-up and rotation
- Side plank (both sides)
Feel free to modify the workout as needed, and if you have more time and energy, you can always complete multiple rounds!
Resistance Band Revival
Let’s talk about one of my all-time favorite travel workout accessories: the resistance band. These lightweight, portable, and versatile little wonders are a digital nomad’s fitness dream. Resistance bands come in various strengths, so you can choose the right level of challenge for your workouts.
With a resistance band, you can perform many of the same exercises that you would do in a gym, but without the bulky equipment. For example, you can do bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder presses, and even chest presses. Plus, resistance bands are great for working those all-important leg and glute muscles (gotta keep that booty in shape for all those Instagram-worthy shots).
Try incorporating resistance bands into your existing workout routines, or find a dedicated resistance band workout online to follow along. The possibilities are practically endless!
Outdoor Adventures
Why not combine your love for travel with your fitness goals by making the great outdoors your gym? There’s nothing quite like getting active while immersed in the beauty and excitement of a new destination. From hiking mountains to cycling through picturesque countryside lanes, there are so many ways to break a sweat and take in the sights simultaneously.
Make it a point to research outdoor activities and attractions at your destination beforehand and incorporate them into your travel itinerary. Not only will you be staying fit, but you’ll also have a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate your surroundings. Imagine the thrill of completing a challenging hike, only to be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view that makes every bit of effort worth it.

Portable Gym Gear
While bodyweight exercises and resistance bands are fantastic, sometimes we crave that gym experience and its variety of equipment. The solution? Portable gym gear! There’s a surprising amount of fitness equipment out there that can easily fit in your luggage and provide some added fun and challenge to your workouts.
A few of my favorite portable gym accessories include:
- Jump rope: Not only is it a fantastic cardio workout, but it also improves your coordination and can be done almost anywhere – just find a flat surface with adequate space.
- Sliders: These small discs are perfect for adding an extra challenge to exercises like lunges and planks, and they work on both carpet and hardwood surfaces.
- TRX suspension trainer: With this handy tool, you can do a full-body workout using your body weight and gravity as resistance. Simply attach the straps to a sturdy anchor point, like a door or tree, and get your sweat on!
Remember, though, not to overpack – as digital nomads, we need to be mindful of our luggage space and weight limits. Prioritize items that you know you’ll use frequently and that can bring variety and enjoyment to your travel fitness routine.
Fit and Social
Traveling is not only about exploring new places, but it’s also about meeting new people and forming connections. Lucky for us, there are plenty of ways to combine socializing with staying fit, even as digital nomads.
Consider joining local fitness groups or classes during your travels. Search for local meetups, Facebook groups, or community centers that offer group workouts, sports clubs, or exercise classes. This is an excellent way to try out new activities, maintain your fitness routine, and make friends with like-minded individuals.
In addition, don’t forget about the world of online fitness communities! Participate in virtual challenges, attend webinars and live classes, or connect with fellow fitness enthusiasts through social media and online forums. This way, you can stay motivated, share your achievements, and exchange tips and inspiration with your online fitness squad.
Healthier Travel Treats
Let’s face it: part of the joy of traveling is indulging in local cuisine. I’m not here to tell you to avoid all those delicious temptations, but I do recommend making some healthier choices to balance out your foodie adventures.
When dining out, consider opting for dishes that include a variety of fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. This will help you stay energized and provide your body with essential nutrients while still allowing you to enjoy the local flavors. Instead of completely depriving yourself of your favorite treats, try the “80/20 rule”: aim to eat healthily 80% of the time, and allow yourself to indulge 20% of the time. That way, you can truly savor those decadent street foods or desserts without feeling too guilty.
Another tip is to stock up on healthy snacks for when hunger strikes during your sightseeing escapades. Find a local market or grocery store and grab some fresh fruits, nuts, or yogurt to keep in your bag. Not only will this save you from reaching for unhealthy options, but it can also help you save some money on food while traveling.
